September 27, 2016. Director of GC RAS Academician Alexei Gvishiani congratulated Mekhanobr Institute with its 100th anniversary. In his congratulatory speech Alexei Dzhermenovich paid particular attention to the important role of the institute in the history of our country, and underlined the international contribution of Mekhanobr and its participation in solving important geopolitical problems.

Mekhanobr laid the foundation for the industrialization of the Soviet Union, developing the country's largest processing plants, played a significant role in supplying the military industry with ferrous and nonferrous metals during the Great Patriotic War. Designing and launching the largest in Eurasia copper and molybdenum processing plant at Erdenet mine in Mongolia, as well as the largest joint economic project on construction of Kostomuksha ore-dressing plant on the border of Karelia and Finland have become examples of successful contribution by Mekhanobr to solution of not only industrial, but also geopolitical problems. Alexei Dzhermenovich also noted that the current head of Mekhanobr Leonid Abramovich Vaisberg personally took part in both projects. Alexej Dzhermenovich mentioned other scientists who made a great contribution to the success of Mekhanobr: Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the Russian Academy of Sciences Dmitry Vasilyevich Rundkvist, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences Vladimir Ivanovich Revnivtsev and others.

Director of GC RAS addressed to the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mekhanobr, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Leonid Abramovich Vaisberg with the most warm words, congratulated all managers and employees of Mekhanobr with a wonderful holiday - the hundredth anniversary, and handed Leonid Vaisberg a memorable gift — a rare medal of the International Geophysical Year.

September 11, 2017. Director of GC RAS Academician Alexey Gvishiani was elected a member of the European Academy ("Academia Europaea") in the section EARTH & COSMIC SCIENCES.

September 6, 2017. A press conference was held at the Central House of Journalists at a regular meeting in the frame of "Scientific Wednesdays" with the presentation "System Analysis of Earth Data for Reducing Natural and Technogenic Disasters" by Director of the Geophysical Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences Academician Alexey Dzhermenovich Gvishiani. The head of GC RAS spoke about the work of the institute, importance of geomagnetic studies and their practical application, international cooperation with foreign research institutes and forthcoming elections at the Russian Academy of Sciences. During the meeting, the GC RAS scientists presented a digital innovative spherical screen. At the end of the presentation, Director of GC RAS gave an interview to the journalists.

August 23, 2017. Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Deputy Director for Science of the Geophysical Center A. Soloviev was appointed Delegate of RAS to the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy (IAGA), replacing Director of the Geophysical Center Academician A. Gvishiani. At the same time, A. Gvishiani remains the national representative in the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG), which includes IAGA.

July 3, 2017. School of Young Scientists "Methods for the integrated assessment of seismic hazard" has opened at the Shmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth (IPE RAS). The School was organized by GC RAS within the framework of the Russian Science Foundation (RNF) project No. 15-17-30020 "Application of system analysis for seismic hazard assessment in Russian regions".
