May 12, 2026. On April 29–30, 2026, the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes was held for the first time in the Republic of Uzbekistan. The Geophysical Center RAS was represented at the commemorative events by D.Sc. Boris Dzeboev, Deputy Director for Science of the GC RAS.

During the opening ceremony, speeches were delivered by the First Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Ochilboy Ramatov, the Minister for Emergency Situations Azizbek Ikramov, and other official representatives of Uzbekistan, Turkey, and Japan, as well as representatives of the UN and the Asian Seismological Commission, including D.Sc. Ruben Tatevosyan, its President and Deputy Director of the Schmidt Institute of Physics of the Earth RAS. The participants laid flowers at the "Courage" monument, dedicated to the response to the 1966 Tashkent earthquake.

A series of sessions followed, during which representatives of Uzbek government authorities spoke about the launch of the regional project "Strengthening the System of Regional Disaster Risk Reduction in Central Asia". Seismology specialists from England, Serbia, Turkey, Uzbekistan, and Japan presented advanced methods and prospects for ensuring seismic safety.

On April 30, continuing the commemorative events, the guests explored the cultural heritage of Samarkand.

The events of the International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes served as an opportunity for experience exchange, strengthening cooperation, and developing effective strategies for disaster risk reduction.

The International Day in Memory of the Victims of Earthquakes was established in 2025 by the UN General Assembly on the initiative of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The purpose of establishing this date was to honor the memory of the victims and stimulate joint efforts to strengthen seismic safety.
