The litosphere of marginal and inland seas.

Information Base of the geological, geophysical data and digital models of the lithosphere of the marginal and internal seas – the Sea of Okhotsk, the Sea of Japan, the Philippine Sea and the Caspian Sea. All available geological and geophysical data for regions being studied are collected. A part of data is digitized.

The base formed contains data on seismology, deep seismic sounding, gravimetry, geothermy, magnetometry, geology, results of the sea geophysical surveys, deap-sea floor drilling, and other data as well. All data have geographic coordinates, supplied with the description of formats and references. Models of the deep structure of the lithosphere of the marginal and inland seas are created on the basis of data complex analysis and interpretation. Models are presented as graphical two- and three-dimensional constructions of maps, sections and schemes, including: maps of geophysical fields and geological-geophysical parameters of the crust and upper mantle; schemes and sections, reflecting location of deep faults, rift structures, volcanic formations, distribution of deep temperatures in the crust and mantle, seismicity and location of mineragenetic zones. Work is carried out on the analysis and interpretation of models, as well as their detailed description. Full range of bibliography is collected. On the server of the Geophysical Center of RAS, free access to the database is provided. The World Wide Web technology is used as an interface to access the data. Communication resource created is an open system, which can be supplied with new data and, correspondingly, with amplified models.

Seismological compound in the catastrophic movement of the glacier Kolka

Collapse of rocks and ice occurred in the Caucasus from July 14th until September 20th , 2002 in the region of Kazbek from the peak of Dzhimarai-Khokh (data of a researcher of the Institute of Geography, RAS). The catastrophic movement of the glacier Kolka began on September 20th and went on along the valley of the river Genaldon to Karmadon settlement. The Kazbek region of the Big Caucasus, where the glacier’s descending zone is located, belongs, in terms of seismic regime, to one of the seismically dangerous zones of the Caucasus. In seismically active regions, all anomalous phenomena are associated with concrete earthquakes that are considered to be initial cause of them.

In this work proposed, the seismic activity analysis of the Kazbek region in relation to the regional seismicity field of the Caucasus is given. Space and time distribution of seismic events in relation to the peak of Dzhimarai-Khokh is analyzed for all the period of observations from historical times until now. Analogous and digital seismographic records, which registered oscillations records, resulted form the glacier’s movements, were processed, and the results of data processing are presented in the conclusion.

Strong movements data base (SMDB). Version 3.1.

SMDBThe Geophysical Survey of the Russian Academy of Sciences (GS RAS) organizes and carries out continuous teleseismic, regional and local observations of seismic situation at the territory of the Russian Federation. Besides the equipment for registration of the remote and close weak events, tools to take records of strong movements are installed at the stations. Materials of observations of analogous stations (seismographic records) and first copies of the station bulletins are kept at seismic stations or in seismological archives of their head organizations. Records of the most interesting events, from the scientific point of view, are sent to Obninsk, where they are copied and included in the seismologic archive of the Central Experimental Methodical Expedition. Records were scanned for the period of 1968 – 1970 and presented in the Strong Movements Data Base (SMDB), version 3.1. It includes: - Parametric information of signals (seismic events, coordinates of seismic stations, characteristic of recording instruments and waves forms. - Numeric seismographic records ( time series) of the three components of strong movements. - Scanned images of the records of strong movements.

     Geotraverses

Fundamental investigations of the deep sections of the lithosphere across the major structural elements of the Earth in transition zone from the Asian continent to the Pacific ocean was conducted together with Japanese and Chinese scientists within the framework of international project “Geotraverse”, developed in the Geophysical Centre of RAS. In the course of works a large volume of different geological and geophysical data for the whole zone of transition was accumulated. Data were used for creating models of the lithosphere of the Pacific along specific traverses in the Sea of Okhotsk, the Sea of Japan, and the Philippine Sea. As a result, the information base of geological and geophysical data and numerical models of the lithosphere along three geotraverses of the Pacific ocean (the Sea of Okhotsk, the Sea of Japan, the Philippine Sea) has been developed and created. The geotraverse length make several thousands of kilometers. The depth is 100 – 200 km.

Besides the deep geological – geophysical sections of the lithosphere and adjacent geological gravimetrical, bathymetrical and magnetic maps, the database includes primary geological and geophysical data, results of bathymetrical measurements, gravimetrical and magnetic surveys, measurements of the thermal flow, deep seismic sounding, tomographic investigations, information on earthquakes and results of studying the fine structure of seismic-focal zone, some data on chemical composition and age of rocks, results of deep sea drilling and dredging.

A free access to this database in the Internet on the site of GC RAS is provided.

Afterwards an optical disk CD-ROM with this database has been prepared.

Database “Catalogue of the Earthquakes of Toktogulskiy region, 1929 – 1991”

Catalogue of the Earthquakes of Toktogulskiy region was created on the bases of results of works carried out by the Complex seismological expedition of the United Institute of the Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Sciences for the period of 1957 – 1991. This catalogue is supplemented with reviewed data of other sources for preceding years, starting with 1929 . The catalogue includes data on earthquakes in the area of the Central Tien Shan and Eastern Fergana. Organization of works in this region was connected with projecting and then with functioning of a cascade of hydro-electrical dams, most of which have large water reservoirs. Toktogulskaya dam (170 m) is the highest in this cascade. Region has also particular interest because it encloses epicentral zones of a range of strong earthquakes, Chatkalskoe earthquake of 1946 yr.(M = 7,4) being the most profound.

Catalogue is followed with a detailed description of experiments carried out, including coordinated and technical characteristics of seismic stations, description of methods, used for data interpretation, map of epicenters, etc.

Determinations of the mechanisms of sources for a range of events in 1965 – 1989 are given as a supplement to the catalogue.

Being the result of a unique, prolonged, continuous experiment, this catalogue could be of interest to scientists, who are interested in detailed studies of seismic regime, earthquakes forecast, and also in connections of seismicity with the other natural and artificial processes and phenomena.

There are two directions of work within the theme “Development of methods of  clasterisation of the large-scale deposits of mineral raw materials in the multidimensional space of geological – geophysical characteristics, having the aim to reveal regularities of deposits formation and situation and forecast of possible zones of new deposits situation” on the programme Department of Earth Sciences-3 “Fundamental problems of geology, conditions of formation and principals of forecast of traditional and new types of large-scale deposits of the strategic types of mineral raw material”. These direction are:
    1) development of a model of formation of large and super-large deposits on the basis of synergic models and ideas on a character of a deep fluidal regime of lithosphere and upper mantle and
    2) development of a model of deposits clasterization in features space. Possible mechanisms of developing non-stable geo-fluidal-dynamic regimes in tectonosphere, being able to cause anomalous accumulation of ore components, are investigated within the framework of the first direction. Modification of algorithms of clasterization for using them in features space, adaptation of these algorithms to the data base on large and super-large deposits is conducted and the question of solubility and sustainability of solution of clasterization task depending on the number of clasterization objects and a number of features taken into account is investigated within the framework of the second direction.
